"My mother and I" A Short drama (20 minutes) Produced independently by Michal Yanai & Segev Gershon.
How it all started?
Our collaboration started two years ago, in the making of a short film called “Adam”. The film was produced independently and in collaboration with fellow producers from the USA and Indonesia.
The national premier of “Adam” was held at the Tel Aviv International LGBT Film Festival of 2013, where its script won the honorable award.
Last June we won The Best Drama In A Short Film award of 2013, at the New York City International Film Festival. Since then we played it in different screenings in notable festivals worldwide.
“Adam” got to travel in various locations such as Canada, Brazil, India, Indonesia, Texas, Italy and in these exact days in a number of special screenings in Hong Kong!
The movie trailer exceeded over 150,000 views on YouTube and we managed to create a broad deep discussion about the harsh topic in which the movie deals with. “Adam” is the first Israeli movie that is facing the tough phenomenon of cyber bullying directly.
“My Mother and I” is our second joint project, and we are also facing forward towards another short film which will complete a short film trilogy dealing with motherhood and of course - a joint feature.
The film is intended for projection in renowned festivals in Israel and across the world, and eventually will be aired in the TV and online.
We started the creation of the movie over a year ago, and in less than a month, at the end of September, we will complete the preparations and will be able to get underway.
In order to do so, we need YOU! And invite you to be our partners inthis long exciting journey.
“My Mother and I” brief
The center of the story is Smadar Rot (Michal Yanai), a single mother who suffers from bipolar disorder (manic-depressive illness), and spends her entire life in a small town in southern Israel. When Smadar turned 22 she won a local beauty queen pageant and was considered promising. A short moment, just before she was about to get on the bus to Tel-Aviv, to pursue her dream, she met Eli. And decided that building a family is more important than building a career. The two got married and gave birth to Guy. Smadar’s dream was left unfulfilled.
After several years, following a number of violent episodes in which Smadar attacked those who were close to her, and her husband in particular. She got hospitalized and was diagnosed with the illness.
In one of the seizures Smadar lost all touch with reality and kicked Eli out of the house, saying that he wants to ruin her life and stop her from fulfilling her dream. Since Smadar was left to raise her 5 year old son, Guy, on her own. A few days later, during an important audition, Smadar experienced a nervous breakdown.
Today Guy (Noam Ossadon), turning 12 years old, is taking care of Smadar. He functions as her close friend, as her parent, as her health taker. He is everything but her son - A 12 year old son, who needs his mother, a mother that’s not going through manic seizures, depression and voids that needs to be filled.
One morning, Guy came across an add, inviting the local mothers residing the south of the country to a beauty pageant. He decides to sign his mom to the competition, in order to make her happy, and hopefully to also cure her.
The preparations for the upcoming event brings them closer, for the first time in many years. Guy is happy to see his mother finally smiling. And Smadar was elated. The big evening comes, will Smadar finally get to fulfill her dream and dazzle the audience. Will Guy finally manage to give his mother happiness and turn her to a normal mom like all the rest of the moms?
