Ukuleles for Peace
Flexible funded project: This project will be funded on Sunday, May 17, 2015
"Ukuleles for Peace" orchestra, established by the musician Paul Moore is celebrating 10 years of activity. It is a unique co – existence NGO, which involves 8-19 years old Arabs and Jews from neighboring towns who play ukulele and sing together in English, Arabic (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JGYwYsKqExE ) and Hebrew (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fudJmI99ehU), and their families.
Our activity entails musical lessons and encounters, social gatherings, activities, trips, community events and shows.
Of course, the situation this summer was especially challenging. Despite the war, the pain, frustration, confusion and sadness , the friendship between Arab and Jewish members of the orchestra, held strong. The parents, Arabs and Jews alike, took a very active stance , supported and reinforced their kids' choices to meet and maintain their friendships. They showed us all how much the friendship they built is important to them.
Our project’s main goal is to create opportunities for Jews and Arabs who live in close proximity to meet and befriend one another. Once friendships and solidarity are established, these children and families will be the force driving the wheels of social change in Israel.
The orchestra performs in festivals, peace events and at schools. We volunteer at Nursing homes, perform for special needs audiences and in hospitals.(https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gez0t_i--VE - This show took place in March 2015 and the band is performing with Peter Yarrow from the trio "Peter, Paul & Mary")
It is very important to us that the orchestra volunteers and is socially involved.
Shows often end with a questions and answers session between the orchestra and the audience about their work together. That enables the audience to interact with the kids and hear first hand of their efforts made to promote co living and peace.
We, Ukuleles for Peace, are proof for children and adults in Israel and abroad that we can all live together in harmony if we only make the choice to.
We believe that the project creates a foundation for a new generation of peace makers, who will be the ones that will build us a better future together.
We are positive that the model we developed can benefit many other conflict areas around the globe.
Our project is voluntary and is led by the mothers, who think, plan and put all the social and cultural activities into action.
The musical director is Paul Moore and I, Daphna Orion, manage our NGO at no cost.
We decided to record our work and musical achievements on a disc, in order to share our music, hope for peace and solidarity. The process was a learning experience by itself. The children chose the songs, produced them, lived together for a week, practiced, recorded, played, took excursions in nature, cooked, played and recorded again.
We need assistance in financing the recording, editing, production and distribution of the disc.
As the kids perfect their craft the need for proper sound equipment is imperative. They take their music very seriously and in order to enable professional performances they need a sound system. We would like to raise money so that we can purchase a proper sound system.
Last but definitely not least:
The orchestra was invited to perform at the oldest, biggest and most prestigious ukulele festival in the world, "Ukulele Festival Hawaii" during summer 2015.
It is a recognition of the orchestra's quality and importance.
We decided to use the opportunity to spread our message of peace, co existence and tolerance by touring in the U.S.A and Canada and performing in front of audiences of all faiths.
Unfortunately, the festival doesn't finance the travel costs of the participating orchestras and we have to find the means ourselves.
We need your help!
We are offering bracelets with the name of the orchestra in Arabic and Hebrew and a drawing of a ukulele, downloadable discs, discs signed by the orchestra's members, cotton bags, T shirts and sweatshirts with the "Ukuleles for Peace" logo, and more.
We want you to become members of our enlarged family and your support will help us make our dreams and yours come true.

"Ukuleles for Peace" orchestra is a nonprofit project, which celebrated 10 years of activity. It is a long term project featuring an orchestra of children and youth aged 8-19, who play ukulele and sing in Arabic, English and Hebrew and perform in Israel and abroad.
These young musicians succeed at what adults have not been able to do through many years of an ongoing conflict:
By playing music together, they get to learn about their different cultures and form a relationship without any stereotypical prejudice.
Moreover, children of both nationalities involve their families in trips, picnics and concerts, which encourage friendships and inter cultural dialog and trigger the families to spread the idea of co existence in their communities in particular and the Israeli society at large.
We believe that these young musicians are the future peace makers of our country.
