IGY – Israel Gay Youth
Wants to get to more youth and young adults
in every corner of Israel!

This is the fourth year that IGY is supporting young adults in the “Year of Service” project. These inspiring young people spend a year living and volunteering together before joining the army. These young people volunteer in underprivileged schools, municipal youth centers and within the IGY groups across the country. Over the past four years we have successful run the “Year of Service” project in Tel Aviv, and we are excited to expand this educational initiative in a number of additional cities throughout Israel.

We have recently received approval from the Ministry of Defense to have this groundbreaking initiative to continue into their army service. They will now be continuing to live and serve together, while creating the first ever LGBT group within the IDF. 

With your help two additional groups of young people will live and volunteer in the periphery of Israel, in Hedera and Nesher. 

Our Goal

We aim to create safe and stable spaces for LGBT young people throughout the periphery of Israel. We believe that through value based education we will be able to shift perspectives throughout Israeli society regarding accepting “the other”, develop a cadre of young leaders, reduce racism, and minimize various gaps that exist in Israeli society.

Why?

Countless young people in Israel suffer from violence and bullying in schools and within their hometowns. We view our work through a wide lens that extends throughout the LGBT community and beyond. In order to create a more equal and just society, it is our responsibility to expand our reach and understanding of acceptance and equality throughout Israeli society. 

In order to achieve these goals our young volunteers are active within formal and informal education frameworks in order to advance a more open, tolerant and accepting Israeli society, while simultaneously take responsibility to provide the appropriate support to LGBT young people across the country, all the while building a thriving LGBT community beyond the bubble of Tel Aviv- in the farthest parts of the Israeli periphery.

Our Aspiration

 We believe that with your help to advance this project, and with our partners in various cities throughout Israel can empower a generation of LGBT young people in Israel. We will shift the reality in which young people must escape to Tel Aviv to avoid the homophobia in their home towns. With your help we can empower young people to make this important change themselves, utilizing their creativity, enthusiasm and their unique ability to bring about change.

What do we need?

In order to make this project a reality we need your help. To support these groups of young people we need financial support to initiate and maintain the groups of “Year of Service” as well as to develop educational programming in the periphery of Israeli society. The funds will be directed to: living expenses, recruitment and coordination of the groups, as well as education and oversight expenses of the groups.
